Introduction to Bereavement Counselling

The Service runs an annual course. This consists of 5 Saturday morning sessions, covering the following topics, focusing throughout on the task. Entry is by application form and interview. The cost is £90.

  • Basic listening skills for care of the bereaved

  • Understanding the grief process

  • Supporting those who have lost a child

  • Children's grief

  • Supporting those bereaved by suicide

  • Loss within the family

How to become a Volunteer

  • No previous experience or qualifications required

  • We require everyone who wishes to work with us to attend our own initial Training Course (see below)

  • Personal experience of a major loss is desirable, but not essential.

  • A warm caring personality with a genuine desire to support people through grief with empathy and on their terms is essential

  • We would recommend to anyone who has had a close bereavement within the last two years that they wait

Initial Training Course (An Introduction to Bereavement Counselling)

Information and an application form is sent out to anyone who expresses interest in the course. On receipt of an application a formal interview is arranged with 2 of the course  facilitators at the City Counselling Centre.
